you notice is relief. aspercreme. >>> christmas also accompanied by sadness and grief, in newtown, connecticut people are still mourning for the 20 children and six adults who were killed when a gunman burst into their school and opened fire. this round-the-clock vigil is under way in remembrance of the shooting victims. a candle was lit in honor of each of them. volunteers are asked to take half hour shifts to keep the candles burning. the vigil started at midnight and will continue until 11:59 tonight. the tragedy in newtown was followed by an outpouring of support from around the world and from nearby communities. today the entire newtown police department is actually getting christmas day off thanks to the generosity of their fellow officers. police from neighboring towns volunteered to fill in so that newtown officers could spend christmas with their families. joining us on the phone newtown police chief michael kehoe. he has been through quite a lot and your officers have been through quite a lot as well as the community. give us a sense of what this means for them to simply

that vice president biden will spearhead his administration's response to the newtown shooting. the president is not expected to go into detail on policy decisions. the national rifle association has broken it's silence issuing a statement that reads in part this. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. that's significant. >> can i stop for a second there? if progressives, if moderates, if conservatives that are concerned about these magazine clips and assault weapons, if they want to feel self-righteous and scream and yell, they can do it and we won't get a deal. this is like the fiscal cliff. in the end it's like in "lincoln" with the 13th amendment. if the nra comes out and says something like that, instead of everybody going, now that blood's on your hands, you know what? guess what? feel self-righteous. you can save lives, or you can feel self-righteous. beat your chest like jim and tammy faye bakker if that's how you sleep at night. if that gets you through the night, go ahead. i tell you what, the art of politics,

its first public station since the newtown shooting and the reaction from the gun control vacation was scathing, no reaction there. lloyd grove of the "daily beast" summed up the reaction by saying the reviews were so brutal they would close a broadway show on opening night. this was news conference a mistake, mr. keene? >> not at all. and, fortunately, we're not on broadway. this isn't a joke. you know, we remained silent right after newtown because we didn't think it was appropriate to comment at time. but now we've come out and looked at it and the question on everybody's minds we tried address is what do you do to prevent this from happening in the future? you know, it was interesting, bob, because that week i was in israel. and they had a spate of school shootings in the 70s and they decided they needed to have security at their schools. they started out with volunteers. they eventually institutional tides and now they have armed security at the schools and they stopped the problem. in this country-- and although the reaction from our critic was, well, this is a crazy idea. th

think it's been a travesty in the wake of newtown, and yes, we should have a conversation about gun control and there should be parody with taking care of the mental health of americans. that discussion has been drowned out or lost or lost or never, ever happened. mr. lanza was obviously a very sick individual and needed help. i'm not sure the mental health discussion has gotten enough attention. what do you think? >> no, it hasn't. in fact, what's been happening is, of course, there's been more stereo typing stereotyping ever people with mental illness calling these people crazy. yes, he probably did have autism and/or asperger's, but people with those disorders don't generally become violent and what's interesting is that on some of the stories on the internet there are people who have made -- posted comments blaming what he did because there have been some unconfirmed reports that maybe he was take something medication. people have made comments blaming the shooting rampage on the medication. this isn't true. the problem is that people -- anybody who needs medication needs to be
